PRACTICE ENGLISH

Last night I had a great marketing idea for my company. I was very excited to tell my boss so I went to work early. I asked the receptionist,

"Is the boss here yet?"


This means that I was asking if the boss had arrived at the office yet, because I was very excited to tell him about my great marketing idea.

PRACTICE ENGLISH

When Ben flew from Barcelona to Los Angeles he was on the plane for 9 hours. I met him at the airport early in the morning to drive him home. Because he was jet lagged he asked me,

"What day is today?"


This means that because he had flown for so many hours, he was confused about what day it was.

PRACTICE ENGLISH

Jenny was walking down the street when she met her friend from highschool, Lucy. Lucy asked her how she was and Jenny replied,

"Fine thanks, and you?"


This means that Jenny is doing very well and she is asking Lucy how she is. When one person asks, "How are you?", the other often replies, "Fine thanks, and you?"

PRACTICE ENGLISH

I just finished reading Sally’s new novel. I loved the way the characters and story developed. The ending was especially surprising. The whole novel was so good!

"It's all so interesting!"
